Many people have the false impression that they can be fully protected against viruses and other malicious programs on the Internet. Well, it is simply not true! You can have the most expensive Internet security program, a Macintosh or whatever else the trend nowadays and still be vulnerable to infections and/or network attacks. The only way to be fully protected on the Internet is to unplug the Internet cable or to disconnect yourself from the wireless network regardless whether you are using PC or Mac. If this is true, what can you do to protect yourself? Of course there are many things you can do to maximize Internet security, but keep in mind that nothing is bulletproof.
In this article I will talk about PC security only. If you are interested about security across different computer platforms, read the upcoming articles.
A strong Internet security solution consists of the following coexisting components:
1) Firewall that protects against incoming and outgoing connections.
2) Anti-virus software that has daily updates available.
3) Anti-spyware/anti-malware protection.
4) Proactive defense software.
5) Complex script blocking plug-in for the Internet browser.
6) A user profile setting, where to gain control of protected system resources you would need elevated privileges.
7) Scheduled anti-virus and anti-spyware scans.
8) Computer programs with valid licenses and regularly available updates.
9) A system without any file sharing (P2P) programs.
10) Educated computer and Internet savvy users.
By neglecting to have any of the above mentioned protection you put your computer, your personal documents and of course your money in danger. Let me further explain the importance of each point.
